Below are descriptions for all the classes we are offering along with images
for most of the classes. Please Note: This list contains the most current information for class dates and supercedes any dates in the Newsletter itself.

Quilting A la Carte

If you ever wanted to make a quilt and had no idea where to start, we have the solution for you. This comprehensive machine piecing classes is geared to beginners and those wishing to improve their piecing skills. Everyone ends up with an attractive quilt. Each class priced separately or Special $75 if you sign up for all five.


Plan Your Quilt

This class is designed for beginning quilters who are overwhelmed by selecting fabric for their  quilt. Time will be spent in the shop selecting fabrics that will make your quilt a visual success. Class will focus on theme fabrics and complementary colors that will add texture and "pop".

 

Cut It Up

Learn basic rotary cutting techniques and safety skills. You’ll cut the fabric for a lap size quilt in this class.

 

Sew It Up

Learn machine piecing and how to assemble pre-cut quilt pieces. Attending the “Cut it Up” class, or basic knowledge of rotary cutting is required, as your quilt pieces are cut before class. Class will focus on piecing Nine Patch blocks and half square triangles.

 

Square It Up

Make sure your patchwork blocks are perfectly square with the technique you’ll learn. Once your blocks are all the same size, you will piece your quilt top together.

 

Border It Up

Having trouble getting quilts to lay flat? Join Muriel and learn the correct way to attach borders and sashing. This class will focus on attaching borders to your pre-sewn top.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Quilt It Up

After you’ve cut your fabrics…sewn your blocks together….this class shows you how to mark and machine quilt a  lap sized quilt. Learn about batting, basting, including ‘spray basting’, and begin quilting your top.


 

Beyond Beginner

This class is designed for those who have finished their first quilt and are eager to learn more! Brush up on your piecing skills while working on a sampler quilt and learning techniques for making quarter-square triangles, flying geese, square-in-a-square blocks and more. Discover how easy it is to add sashing and set your blocks on point. Learn how to miter corners the easy way. Attending the Quilting A la Carte series or basic knowledge of piecing is required.

 

Hand Piecing

The perfect class to learn the basics of patchwork. Anne shows how to make templates, mark fabric and stitch the traditional way, as well as a new method using stamps. Hand piecing is a gentle sociable art that give you time to be with others as you create a thing of beauty. This class takes the “puzzle” out of patchwork.

 

Hand Quilting - The Ultimate Finish!

Hand quilting gives a quilt an indefinable elegance, and gives the quilter a sense of peace and purpose in the project. You owe it to yourself to try this method…learn marking, sandwiching, and hand stitching on a sample that you could finish into a pillow. It just take a little practice…Anne will share all about needles and threads, and show her quilts.

 

Binding Your Quilt

Learn the secrets of continuous double-fold binding, crisp corners, machine or hand finishes. Muriel will show you options. Turn your sample piece into a cute “Three Pocket Purse!” We’ll discuss “mock” and “pillow turn” bindings. If you have a quilt ready for binding, Muriel will help determine which method to use.

 

Color Plan Your Quilt

Hand Appliqué

Are you ‘allergic’ to appliqué?! Have you tried, but not liked it? Using a simple floral appliqué, Anne will teach the needle turn method along with the importance of using the correct needles and thread. It’s the perfect class for beginners or improving appliqué techniques.

 

Appliqué Many Ways

Have you tried appliqué and just can't get the hang of it? It’s great for beginners and those who wish to polish their appliqué skills. In a day long class, you’ll learn many methods of appliqué, including stems and circles, and be able to choose which methods are best for you.

 

 

Back Basting Appliqué

This is a type of needle turn appliqué that is faster, just as accurate and easier. No templates to make and we do not mark the front of our background. Wanda will show you this method that is rapidly becoming the ‘in thing’! Even if you are experienced in appliqué you should try this technique.

 

Machine Quilting I

Machine quilting is…marking…layering the top, choosing batting and backing…free motion…in the ditch…straight line… Learn about thread, batting and other tools, while you work on sample squares. Bring quilt tops for discussion, and leave with a bit of confidence to finish those lovely tops.

 

Free Motion Quilting

Free yourself from straight lines in machine quilting projects. Learn to design your own patterns, draw feathers, and use no-mark designs, stippling, meandering… and more! You should have some machine quilting experience. All work will be done with the darning or free motion foot.

 

Scalloped Edges

Discover how easy it is to make perfect scalloped edges. You’ll work on a placemat in class, learning the technique to apply to quilts, clothing, pillows, table runners, and more!

 

 

Beginner Foundation Piecing

Paper piecing is a wonderful tool for accuracy especially with small pieces. It’s  easier than it appears. If you look for accurate piecing; you’ll enjoy this introduction, as you make a small piece. Janice shows how easy this can be.

 

Paper Piecing Workshop

Have you seen a paper piecing pattern that you love, but were afraid to try? Bring it to the Paper Piecing Workshop and Debbie will help you get started; or bring an unfinished paper piecing project to work on. She’ll also provide a paper piecing block for you, and demonstrate an easy paper piecing method. You’ll learn a few tricks along the way that will help prepare you for future paper piecing projects. Appropriate for all skill levels.

 

Storm at Sea

The Storm-at-Sea pattern uses angles to give the illusion of a wave when viewed diagonally.  Join us and learn an easy paper piecing method (anybody can make wonderfully accurate designs). Start on a beautiful lap quilt using scraps or using a planned dark/light fabric combination.  Storm-at-Sea is a great pattern for your first or hundredth paper piecing project!  Appropriate for all ages.

 

Invisible Machine Applique

Do you love the look of appliqué, but don't think you have the time to do it?  Try this method that looks like hand appliqué, but can be sewn in a fraction of the time on your  machine!    No sticky glue, wetting, or trimming required!  Learn to prepare templates, choose fabric, thread, shape appliqué pieces, and adjust the stitch on your machine to give you that "hand sewn" look.

 

Story Quilt Workshop
Sun. Jan. 22, Feb. 26, Mar. 25                      1pm – 4pm

This class requires some patchwork and applique knowledge. The result will be very unique story quilt. Anne will show techniques necessary to accomplish this. You’ll learn how to choose your fabrics, draft a block from a picture, construct the blocks, and arrange them in a quilt. Anne has done several of these story quilts and they all have won first place ribbons. Come and learn from the pro.

Redwork Stitchery

Learn the best way to transfer a stitchery pattern to fabric. Elisabeth will teach you the basic stitches used in traditional redwork as you work on the pattern of your choice. We’ll have several for you to choose from and provide you with fabric. You may want to purchase a linen towel to stitch on.  Several suggestions will be given  on how you could use your finished piece.

Embroidery

Embroidery and Crazy Quilt Stitches

Have you ever wanted to embellish a quilt with embroidery and thought that it was too intricate and difficult? In this class you will learn various embroidery stitches and motifs that you can use to adorn your crazy quilt or any regular quilt and make it unique. This is a fun way to create a whimsical, personalized and original work of art.

 

 

 

Elisabeth’s Embroidery Club

Jan. 17, Feb. 21, Mar. 20, Apr. 17      10am – 12pm    $45                                              Teacher: Elisabeth Frolet If you love and admire embroidered Crazy Quilts from the nineteenth century and want to learn all those wonderful stitches, come and join Elisabeth at our monthly  embroidery gathering. Every month Elisabeth will teach  something new. We’ll explore the process of fabric selection, color planning for crazy quilts and help you to improve  embroidery skills. It will be a fun way to make something beautiful and maybe start a Crazy Quilt or  other embroidery project.

 

In Stitches

Lemoyne Star and More

The Lemoyne Star block has always been viewed as being complicated to piece. Once again, Deb Tucker and Studio 180 Design has developed a ruler to simplify the piecing. By starting with strips of fabric and using the Lemoyne Star Ruler, Linda will show you how easy, fun, and precise it is to piece this traditional block. In this class, you'll have the option of using this ruler, the Hunter Star or the V Block one which makes the 54-40 or Fight block. Students receive a 25% discount on the ruler of their choice.

 

Let’s Twist

Wool Works

FREE – please register to reserve a seat
If you’re working with wool…come join us! That’s the only requirement. We’re gathering on the 2nd Friday of each month to work on any project using wool…rug hooking, rug punching, penny rugs,...anything as long as wool is one of the fibers! We’ll share tips and ideas. Meet quilters, rug hookers, rug braiders, knitters…even spinners! Join us!

 

Wool Crazy

In this class you’ll build a crazy wool base as described in the book “Wool Crazy” layering the wool on a base fabric and do some decorative stitches to secure. In the second class Fran will show how to apply wool appliqués using the patterns in th book or patterns of your choice.  

 

Rug Hooking and Needle Punch

Learn the  wonderful craft of making rugs from wool.  Every step in the process is covered while making the rug from a kit you purchase from us, (discounted price for students). Rug hooking is soft, quiet and the end result is an heirloom.

Needle punch creates small masterpieces with embroidery floss or pearl cotton, that look like small hooked rugs. It’s simple and easy to learn and…very portable! These small works of needle art are ideal for framing.

 

Primitive Club

Projects for this club include a wide range of fabric including cottons, homespuns, flannels, and wool. Techniques will include piecing, appliqué in cotton or wool, and decorative primitive stitches. Every month ideas for new projects are presented. January is planning time for the list of projects that the group will work on. Many projects will come from the Primitive Quilts and Projects magazine as well as other books from favorite primitive  designers.

 

Small Treasures and Needful Things

Bring your sewing machine and come for four mornings of sewing delight. The projects for this class will be mostly sewn in class with a bit of outside finishing. One  project will be a surprise challenge. Barbara will show you how to add personality and whimsy to your small treasures. The creativity in this group is amazing. You won’t want to miss the monthly show & tell.

 

T Shirt Quilt

Gather up T-shirts and get ready for some fun! Learn how to build your own T-shirt quilt with your shirts! There are no rules and every quilt turns out different. Besides learning to prepare your T-shirts, we’ll show other options to making T-shirt quilts. It’s a wonderful way to preserve special memories… makes a great gift! Sewing experience required.

Precision Machine Piecing

Are you interested in advancing and improving  workmanship in machine piecing? Wanda will show the proper steps for pinning, cutting, sewing and pressing. You’ll master the 1/4” seam allowance,, sew straight, for a perfect finished block.

 

 

Big Stitch’ Quilting

You’ll love this different technique for hand quilting using the ‘quilting big stitch’. This fast, fun, and easy stitch will look great on many projects. Using pearl cotton and a hoop, Barbara shows how to plan your quilting pattern (without marking!) and ‘big stitch’ your way to an amazing finish.

 

Reproduction Quilt Group

If you love reproduction quilts and have a desire to learn about quilt and fabrics from the 1800’s, this is the class for you. Mary Ellen will help you design a reproduction quilt in a medallion style or rows. You’ll use ‘today’s’ fabrics to create the look of a vintage quilt; made in a size perfect for you. The camaraderie and encouragement from others  will drive you to new heights of creativity. Bring UFO’s for discussion and help in finishing. There’s a yahoo group too!

 

Sit and Sew

Are you interested in making a cute dress for a special little girl; or maybe interested in finishing the room that you put your latest quilt in with coordinating pillow shams or window treatments.  Bring your project and  sew with Wanda, who will help you with any challenges you face, sharing tips and techniques that will strengthen your sewing skills.  Come and enjoy the group each month or sign up when you need that extra little help. Wanda’s has years of knowledge in clothing and home dec, and loves sharing her tips and techniques.

 

Buttonhole and Zippers - The Perfect Finish

The project has gone together beautifully and looks great, but now it’s time to put in the buttonholes or zippers.  The last thing you want is for either of these to make your project look “homemade”!  This class will take the fear out and help you master these elements.

 

Smocking

We generally think of smocking as the beautiful stitching on a little girl’s dress, but it can be used in other ways.  Join Wanda as you learn or review the basic smocking stitches and explore other ways to use this form of art. Pleating services available.

 

Doll Clothes Workshop

Indulge your “Inner Child” and join us for a full day of fun and play. This class will be dedicated to making contemporary-styled clothes for 18” dolls (such as American Girl) based on the book “Love to Dress Up 18” Doll Clothes”. We have other patterns that could be used as well. Linda has years  of experience and will share her special techniques. Basic sewing skills necessary.

 

Double Wedding Ring

If you’ve admired that great old fashioned Double Wedding Ring Quilt, now you have the opportunity to make one the easy way. We will make a three ring table runner in class using Marti Michell's templates; and you’ll be able to make a bed quilt.

 

Quotation Quilt

Time to start planning for those June weddings, graduations, and teacher gifts. A quotation quilt makes the perfect gift that will provide fond memories for years to come. Sample is shown in homespuns but this quilt is also great in pastels, bright prints, vintage fabrics, etc. The method for making this quilt is easy and fast.

 

Linen Tote Purse or Tote Bag

In this two session class, you’ll make a purse or tote bag, you’ll be proud to carry. Purchase the linen panel with vintage sewing motifs in cream and black or teal and brown, and Jackie will take you through it step by step preparing and sewing it. She’ll show making other small accessories with other parts of this beautiful panel.  Can also  be made with other fabrics. Other sewn purses will be shown.

 

Baltimore Album – New Series

A new series is starting as we have had many requests for this popular year-long study in the making of a Baltimore Album style quilt. Under Wanda’s direction, you’ll learn different techniques and the history while constructing this heirloom quilt. Learn something different every month. Those who have started a Baltimore Album quilt can join this group if you still need help or just like being with a group to keep you motivated.

 

Advanced Baltimore Study

Our Advanced group is going strong, and you can still join us if you have Baltimore Album experience. You can work on a current project, or concentrate on re-creating one of many antique quilts from that era. Some are finishing their first Baltimore Album quilt while others are working on the Metropolitan, the Captain Russell or the Mary Simon quilts. Join us as we explore these wonderful quilts.

 

Stained Glass Quilt

We all admire a beautiful stained glass window, so why not use  gorgeous fabrics, a simple design and easy technique to create a stunning ‘stained glass’ quilt. In class you will finish a ‘stained glass’ quilt block. Wanda will also demo techniques for a floral version. Come join  the fun. Wanda will get you started. It’s easy – perfect for all skill levels.

 

 

Prairie Women’s Sewing Circle

Join this unique, monthly club as they begin Journey 3 on their trip back in time. Muriel  shares anecdotal stories about prairie women, their quilt making, and what daily life was like for those who traveled by wagon train, to the lives of quilter’s during the Civil War, plus years of women’s suffrage for equal rights. Not only will you learn how our quilting ancestors created quilts by “Making-Do” with what they had, you will be invited to do so yourself! If you love quilt history, and want to learn about what life was like in the 19th Century, join us. Each month, small reproduction quilt project pattern and  kits  will be available to purchase at $6 off for members. Monthly patterns, bonus projects and other surprises will be offered exclusively to PWSC club members! We’ll have a yahoo group to share projects with online members.

 

Basic Patchwork

If you're a real beginner, this class is perfect to try your hand at patchwork and quilting. You'll learn basic patchwork, how to use the rotary cutter, cut fabric and sew an accurate 1/4" seam. Tips and techniques will be shown. Select a fabric kit to make a pillow or small table mat, using our rulers, mat & cutter. Bring your sewing machine or use ours, if you don't own one yet. We sell the perfect machine!

 

Toothbrush Rug

If you have a fabric stash… this is the class for you. You’ll prepare strips of fabric, and using a ‘crochet style’ stitch with a needle that looks like a broken tooth brush, begin to make a rug, placemat, or table runner. Jackie will show you how to start, you’ll love how easy it is. Can be done with any fabrics, batiks, homespuns..any cotton fabrics. Don’t miss our sample!

 

Star Struck

For those of you who love stars, this is for you.  This  study group will focus on piecing star blocks from simple Saw-tooth Stars to more difficult stars like Lone Star and Feathered Stars; as well as studying the history of star quilts.  We’ll make a different star block each month or make a whole quilt – you decide!  Each quarter will feature a special guest teacher focusing on a more difficult star.  In March, Janice will be teaching paper pieced stars. She’s our ‘staff expert’ on paper piecing.  New and different star challenges each quarter along with block exchanges, challenges, and show & tell will add to the fun.

 

Groovy Girls Sewing Club

Join this monthly get together where club members will laugh, learn, and be inspired by creative ideas for making quilts, totes, carryalls, and other small projects. Special projects and variations of patterns from Atkinson Designs will be shown first to Groovy Girl members. Kits available at a discount. Games, door prizes, refreshments, and a fun time! Jackie will show additional quilt projects and techniques that will help use some of that ‘stash’!

Are you intrigued by the renewed interest in floor cloths? Sign up for this hands on demo/class, and learn how to turn your fabric stash into floor cloths for any area in your home. You’ll leave with a place mat or table topper perfect for the holidays. Jackie will show you how to prepare fabrics and mark your designs onto roller shade fabric with step by step techniques to prepare you to make a floor cloth any size.

 

 

 

 

Day with Marty

Marty  teaches fun classes where you combine fabric with paper and other mixed media techniques. She has a unique style and loves embellishment of all types. Let her show you how to make a “little bitty ditty bag’ to store your stitching ‘goodies’,  and decorate it like only she can. Explore making a beaded neck cord and various ways to sew and decorate, raw edge appliqué, mix wool and cotton, various decorative pins, charms, lace and buttons. Come and ‘watch Marty in action, bring your own ‘stuff’ and combine with the kit.

 

One Block Wonder

One fabric + one shape = one of a kind quilt! You’ll love this unusual method of making a quilt. You won’t start with a traditional quilt pattern…instead this approach begins with a fabric. Muriel will show how cutting strips and then triangles that will be magically sewn into blocks and then into a special quilt. You’ll see how the fabric does all of the work! There’s a discount to students on the special ruler that makes this technique almost foolproof!

Have you been curious about this  computer drawing program from Electric Quilt. It’s easier than ever to learn. Our beginner's guide shows you just how user-friendly the program is - by the end of class you will have designed your very own quilt, and have confidence to continue designing.   EQ serves as a virtual design wall, to audition fabrics, block placement, setting options, border sizes, etc. You can see before you sew!   A hands-on class, bring your laptop with EQ loaded.  If you’re  thinking of purchasing the program, you'll  share the workstation in the classroom.  “Once you EQ”, your computer  becomes an important tool in your sewing room!

 

Leap To It Event

Leaping lizards -it’s leap year and that means an extra day to sew!  That’s all it takes for a quilting event, so leap on over and join Muriel for some fun leap day stitching.  It will be a leap of faith as we will be making a mystery quilt, but your efforts will be rewarded with a beautiful 57” x 74” quilt almost totally finished by the end of the day.  Pattern and lunch will be provided.  Leap to it!  Sign up today!

There are several options for strap length and finishing of the bottom of the bag. Lots of inside pockets. This bag can be customized just for you! Learn other tips for making purses and totes.
